At 17′ wide and 12’9″ on the ground, this project presented several challenges getting permitting and route approval from Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. That prep work took 30-45 days. We had police escorts from the Maryland state line all the way to Rhode Island. In order to get approval in Connecticut, we had to keep the loaded height under 14′. This required us to use a special 1′ deck height perimeter trailer. Smith Specialized worked personally with Linda Hope, head of Connecticut DOT, to get that approval. We also had to work within the strict Pennsylvania super load permitting and bond guidelines to get approval. We were the only carrier to present a solution for moving this load by truck, rather than by barge, a much costlier option.
